LANGUAGE

Are you worried that;

  1. your child is not following instructions?

  2. Your child is following routine instructions but doesn’t seem to understand other less routine instructions?

  3. Your child doesn’t seem to answer questions appropriately; it feels like they didn’t quite “get” the question?

  4. Do you feel you often have to repeat what you say many times? Does your child have difficulty to focus?

Receptive language (comprehension) refers to understanding of language.

Difficulty understanding spoken language impacts reading comprehension. It involves skills such as listening and attending, following instructions, processing and organising information, memory and understanding concepts, word meaning and grammar.

Are you worried that;

  1. Your child doesn’t seem to have enough vocabulary comparing to other children their age?

  2. Your child makes many grammatical errors that doesn’t sound age appropriate?

  3. Your child sentence length is quite short?

  4. Your child can’t tell you what they have done in preschool/school?

  5. Your child talks too much but not to the point and you find it difficult to understand what they are meaning?

  6. Your child is struggling to find the words they want to say and get easily frustrated?

  7. You are not sure about your child’s language what are they supposed to do at “their age”?

  8. For primary school age children- your child is struggling to come up with ideas to write, form sentences or have problems with planning.

Expressive language refers to the ability to get your message across.

Combining words and ideas into sentences, appropriate use of grammar, using the right vocabulary, being aware of the listeners needs and providing the right information and ability to tell stories and experiences.

Writing is part of expressive language at the primary school age. Children experiencing difficulty with language may struggle as they start their schooling years and therefore early intervention is crucial.
